Entangled Lives:
How Fungi Work in Our World

Tonight’s presentation looks at the fungi in the Adirondack forest, how they grow, how they enrich the soil and connect trees and plants, and why they play such a vital role in our world.

Mycologist Susan Hopkins who lives in the Saranac Lake area, has been a “serious mushroom person” for 40 years. Susan is a member of the New Jersey Mycological Association and has attended most of the Northeastern Mycological Forays, the annual, regional convention of amateur mushroomers. After attending the 1993 International Fungi-Fibre Symposium in Scotland she became a “dyer,” learning the use of various species of wild fungi to dye wool. Identification is her main focus with a special interest in all of the tooth fungi, those with spines as the spore bearing surface under their cap. Susan now lives in the Adirondacks, learning the local fungi flora and continues to do many lectures, walks, and demonstrations on fungi and mushroom dyeing.
