Watercolor Painting from Photographs, with Kevin Raines

Saturday, November 12
10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Whitcomb's Community Room

This Watercolor Painting from Photographs class will be held in the indoor studio setting of the Whitcomb's Community Room. A separate class Watercolor Painting from Still Life will take place on Saturday, October 8. Students may sign up for one or both classes.

The class will feature painting from students’ own photographic sources. The subject matter for the class may be photographs of still life, human or animal portraits, interiors, or landscape.

Kevin will introduce and demonstrate various watercolor techniques while emphasizing ways of transferring an image from a photographic source to the watercolor paper. Kevin will also demonstrate methods of blocking in compositional areas from simplicity to complexity by using a grid or through free-hand drawing. Each member of the class will then pursue their own aesthetic interests in subject and preferred technique. Students are encouraged to bring lunch in order to optimize our painting time.

Students must bring two 8”x10” copies of the same photographic source to paint from. One black and white or color printout will be used to grid upon,  and the second un-gridded full color print will be a clean reference for each student to work in color from. We will not be working from virtual photographs on a computer screen or smartphone. You may however print out two copies of the same digital image from your computer or phone. If you have an actual photograph please scan a black and white duplicate of the print and bring both to class. You may also want to bring several pairs of 8”x10” photos to choose from once you have seen the demonstrations.

Please bring a yardstick and a 4H drawing pencil. Kevin will have a limited number of yardsticks that may be borrowed, and bringing your own measuring device will speed up the process.

Most materials will be provided or you may bring your own. Paper will be available for purchase at a modest price.

If you have questions please contact Kevin at 443-695-9202 or email him at kevinrainesart@gmail.com
