A young black man from New York City, Derick Lugo hit the Appalachian trail with an overweight backpack, a can-do attitude, and very little hiking experience. What followed were lessons on preparation, humility, race relations, and nature's wild unpredictability. Known on the trail as Mr. Fabulous, Lugo refused to let anything squash his inner Pollyanna, persevering with humor, tenacity and an unshakable commitment to grooming that sees him from Georgia to Maine.
Derick Lugo is an adventurer, a storyteller, and author of The Unlikely Thru-Hiker, a humorous memoir of his six-month thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. A popular speaker, Lugo has written pieces for outdoor magazines and short stories for anthologies. He will be Writer-in-Residence at Snowfort Books & Friends in Westport this fall. In addition to his work as a writer, Derick is host of the popular podcast, Unlikely Stories.
