The "Long War" of the American Revolution, 1754-1815

The Grange Winter Lyceum presents
THE “LONG WAR” OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, 1754-1815

Tuesday, March 10
7:00pm

The American Revolution was part of a series of global wars that began in the middle of the eighteenth century with the Seven Years War and ended with a peace treaty between the United States and United Kingdom in 1815. The battlefields stretched from Europe to North America to the Indian subcontinent as the major powers fought to redivide the world to their own advantage.

This presentation by historian Andy Buchanan will examine the War of American Independence in this context and discuss how the territorial ambitions and international alliances of the various world powers came together with an anti-colonial and civil war that was fought on American soil. The outcomes of this period ushered in an “Age of Revolution” and fundamentally reshaped the world order.

Andy Buchanan is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Vermont. He teaches global and American history and is the author of numerous books and articles on World War II. His most recent books include The Greater Second World War: Global Perspectives (with Ruth Lawlor) and From World War to Postwar: Revolution, Cold War, Decolonization, and the Rise of American Hegemony, 1943-1958.
